AAC wall panels: a solid masonry finish, no brick queue

Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel Wall is a steel-reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) panel that screws to a timber or light gauge steel frame and takes a render finish. You get the solid, monolithic look WA homeowners grew up with, without waiting your turn for bricks.

It comes in 50mm and 75mm thicknesses, 600mm wide and up to 3.3m tall, and it's certified for external walls, zero lot boundary walls and intertenancy walls. Midstream keeps Gravis panels and components in store in Mandurah, and anything not on the shelf is ordered in and delivered fast, so the full wall system comes from one supplier.

Why WA builders are looking at AAC right now

Most detached homes in WA are still double brick, and brick is on allocation. Every alternative runs through a frame, and Gravis lets you keep the rendered masonry finish clients ask for.

  • No kiln queue. Panels screw to the frame on top hats, with no mortar courses to lay or cure.
  • Same street appeal. Once rendered, the wall reads as solid masonry. Pair it with Axon™, Linea™ or Stria™ above for the mixed-material look in every new display village.
  • Paperwork sorted. CodeMark certified (CM40467) against NCC 2022 (Amdt 2) and NCC 2025, with modelled R-values, fire and acoustic results your certifier can sign off.

Where it works

Features & Benefits
Why choose Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel Walls for your next project? Like our other James Hardie products, it offers benefits such as:
  • Built to last
Corrosion-protected steel mesh inside every panel, backed by a 25 year James Hardie product warranty.
  • Fire on your side
Non-combustible, with fire resistance levels up to 180/180/180 depending on the system. Suits bushfire prone blocks up to BAL-FZ.

  • Quieter rooms
Wall systems tested from Rw 46 up to Rw 54, so road noise and the neighbour's air con stay outside.
  • Easier energy ratings
The aerated core insulates. Total wall R-values run from 2.16 to 3.55 depending on panel, frame and insulation, and James Hardie offers 7-Star modelling support.
  • Your choice of finish

Approved for leading acrylic render systems from Dulux® Acratex®, Rockcote®, Sto and Taubmans, from fine float to coarse bagged textures.

50mm or 75mm?

Choose 50mm for most single and double storey facades where you want a lighter panel and standard reveals. Fibreglass mesh is embedded over every adhesive joint in the render base coat.
Choose 75mm for deeper window reveals and the highest fire rating (180 minutes integrity and insulation with 2 x 16mm fire rated plasterboard). It's made with a lower density mix, so it's only around 10kg heavier per panel.

Product specifications

All panels are 600mm wide with square edges and single mesh reinforcement. Weights are approximate at 35% moisture content.

Everything for the wall system, from one counter

Walk out with a complete, compliant system rather than chasing parts across town.
You'll also need: 14-10 Type 17 screws (Class 4 near the coast), backing rod, DPC, non-compressible packers, insulation, and your render system.
Getting it right in Perth and Peel conditions
  • Coastal blocks
Within 1km of the coast, or anywhere with salt spray, use Class 4 fasteners. That covers a big slice of Mandurah, Falcon, Dawesville and Halls Head. Wash salt residue off panels before rendering.
  • Sand sites
    Vertical control joints go at a maximum 6.0m on Class A and S sites, tightening to 5.5m (M), 5.0m (H1) and 4.5m (H2).
  • Wind
Certified up to wind category N3, which covers typical suburban sites across Perth, Mandurah and Peel. Corner zones within 1200mm of the building edge need closer top hats and more screws.
  • Render on time
Apply the coating system within 60 days of fixing to keep warranty cover. A three coat system is recommended.
  • Cut safely

AAC contains crystalline silica. Use wet suppression or on-tool extraction to an M or H class vacuum, a fitted P2 respirator, and never dry sweep.

Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel Wall FAQs

Yes, for most residential walls. It gives a solid, rendered masonry finish on a timber or steel frame, is CodeMark certified for the NCC, and avoids brick supply delays. You'll need a frame, a fresh energy rating and a render applicator.
The 75mm panel suits deeper reveals and the highest fire rating. The 50mm panel is lighter and covers most standard facades. Both are 600mm wide.
Yes. The zero lot system fixes panels from inside the cavity with the Gravis Direct Fix Clip, so you don't need access from the neighbour's side. Any section above the neighbouring roofline must be treated as an external wall.
Yes. External walls need an approved acrylic render and paint system, applied within 60 days of installation. Approved suppliers include Dulux Acratex, Rockcote, Sto and Taubmans.
Yes, up to BAL-FZ. A standard system covers sites up to BAL-40, while BAL-FZ sites need a system rated to at least FRL 30/30/30.
Yes. Within 1km of the coast you must use Class 4 fasteners, and panels should be washed with fresh water to remove salt before coating.
Between 45kg and 83kg depending on length and thickness. Carry panels on edge, not flat, and use panel lifters or mechanical aids where you can.
A 25 year James Hardie product warranty, provided the panel is installed, coated and maintained to the installation guide.
